A dose of one rad is equivalent to the deposition of one hundred ergs of energy in one gram of any material. Note that, the erg is a unit of energy and work equal to 10−7 joules. A related unit, the roentgen, is used to quantify the radiation exposure. The F-factor can be used to convert between rads and roentgens.

Basic conversions

1 gray (Gy) = 100 rad
1 rad = 10 milligray (mGy)
1 sievert (Sv) = 1,000 millisieverts (mSv) = 1,000,000 microsieverts (μSv)
1 sievert = 100 rem
1 becquerel (Bq) = 1 count per second (cps)
1 curie = 37,000,000,000 becquerel = 37 Gigabecquerels (GBq)

For x-rays and gamma rays, 1 rad = 1 rem = 10 mSv
For neutrons, 1 rad = 5 to 20 rem (depending on energy level) = 50-200 mSv

millisievert – microsievert – units of equivalent dose

In radiation protection, the sievert is a derived unit of equivalent dose and effective dose. The sievert represents the equivalent biological effect of the deposit of a joule of gamma rays energy in a kilogram of human tissue. Unit of sievert is of importance in radiation protection and was named after the Swedish scientist Rolf Sievert, who did a lot of the early work on dosimetry in radiation therapy.

	Our figure 01: annual worldwide average doses (in microsieverts) from different exposure pathways of radionuclides produced in atmospheric testing ~ includes inhalation, ingestion & external exposure [UNSCEAR2000C] ...(note) external exposure in the case of tritium: tritium changes from gas to liquid to solid and back at will; the radioactive hydrogen atom coming in contact with a non-radioactive hydrogen atom, converts the non-radioactive hydrogen to radioactive hydrogen. consequently tritium cannot be taken out of water (h₂0), because it has made the hydrogen atoms that constitute the water to be radioactive. when tritium externally comes into contact with your skin, since you are 65%-to-85% water, the tritium immediately enters your skin into your body. tritium rays do not shoot far, just far enough to destroy your dna. when you inhale, or eat tritium in garden vegetables uptaking radioactive water, for example, it redistributes inside you.
